General information

Part of the digital preservation strategies currently underway in Fondren includes participation in the international MetaArchive program. The MetaArchive consortium (http://www.metaarchive.org/) uses LOCKSS software to preserve selected collections. As a member of this consortium Rice runs a MetaArchive server that holds collections from other MetaArchive member institutions.

IR Contributing Communities

Currently Fondren is preserving a selection of collections from the Rice Digital Scholarship Archive (IR) as follows:

Participating:

    • Rice Electronic Theses and Dissertations

    • Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) publications

    • Woodson Research Center online archive
    • Rice Thresher student newspaper

The Rice Thresher was ingested by the cooperative on 11/8/2011 by Rice-FE, South Carolina-FE, HBCU-eRack, Hull-eRack, Oregon-eRack, PSU-eRack. At the time the collection contained 7659 items. The collection is currently 1 archival unit (AU) the size of which is X. the Collection stops with resumption token 7600. Future harvests should be collected by adding a second AU. The HTML crawlable page can be found here (it will be very slow to open due to its size.)    http://harvest.library.rice.edu/hdl_1911_27631_1.html

Near Future:

    • Rice Ephemera Archive
    • School of Humanities
    • Rice School of Natural Science

Forth coming:

    • The Rice Institute Pamphlets
    • Rice University Commencement Programs and Ephemera

    • Rice University General Announcements

Complex collections:

    • Americas Archive

    • Museum of Houston

    • Shepherd School of Music

    • Travelers in the Middle East Archive (TIMEA)

Issues and tasks

  • Investigate ways to automate notification of changes or additions to IR collections

    • RSS feeds are enabled at both community and collection level, subscribing to the above collections then will push out information for when items are added to the IR

  • Conduct “recovery” test to better understand process and outputs from program

  • Investigate ways to automate metadata upload to MetaArchive system (plug-in, csv file upload)

  • Develop schedule for “re-harvesting” or pushing out data to MetaArchive

  • Refinements to OAI harvesting tool(?)

  • Add master files to IR (eg TIFFs, WAVs, etc) to be included in harvest to MetaArchive – these files are considered high “at-risk” formats because of difficulty or high costs to reproduce

    • update 18 Nov 2011 : Ying currently working on test collection
  • Retrieving data test
